Zero to Hero – Cody Smith

I come from three generations of Firefighters and my family may as well have been the first privates in the Revolutionary War so to say my life was already planned out before I came into the world is an understatement.  Until this very year there was one absolute about my life,  I was going to be a soldier and so at a very early age I volunteered on a Search and Rescue team and set out to improve my fitness levels.  Really it wasn’t anything drastic, a couple of fun runs here and there mixed in with various obstacle courses and other competitions.  In all actuality I was never really an “athlete”  that is until the summer of 2011.  See I had never planned to follow my father and grandfather into the Volunteer Fire Service, instead I was to be a career officer, a warrior, a locked on and steady troop at least that was always the plan until I just happened to be on Hulu (I was quite the Zero mind you)  and I stumbled across a documentary about the Oregon Fire Service so I watched it and instantly I was hooked.  I had it in my head that I was gonna be a Firefighter.  So being just a wryly sixteen year-old I immediately applied for the volunteer Department my dad had served on, not realizing the physical requirements.  After the initial application I began my training to be a firefighter,  now I had never been one to lift any weights besides a ruck, so I grabbed two stones (named them pride and discipline and occasionally they accompany me on a WOD) tied two straps to them and used them as free weights.  For two months I did the same routine while running and eating a “warrior diet” (more on that later).  Now I still wanted to join the military and a couple of my friends joined the National Guard which pushed me over the edge, at this point there were two absolutes in my life I was to be a firefighter and a soldier.  Motivated by my new revelations I started looking for 5k’s to run, after seeing the usual “Fun run” rubbish I began thinking that there HAS to be something out there that combines the military aspect with running, lo and behold I found the Sparta Nation!  After one look at the WODs I was hooked!  I had always been a huge subscriber to the “fit to fight” and “functional fitness” theories which basically says to work out for the mission and Spartan Race did just that!  Instead of the boring weight lifts I was now doing functional stuff, lifting, pushing, pulling, and weighting my body to grow into the warrior I am today.  As a result I am pleased to say I am a proud member of the Corn Fed Spartans, a firefighter who knows no limits, and a warrior (ok artilleryman) ready to put steel on steel with the bad guys.  Life is a battle, Spartan Race gets you off the defensive, get your feet dug in, Spartan up and carry on.  If you’re reading this and even thinking about Spartan Race just do it, you won’t start transformation from Zero to Hero without motivation!
